Blessings Come in Small Packages

As I was walking to visit a kindergarten to listen to children in song, in the Namibian Coastal town of Swakopmund I was stopped by a young lady, Selma, asking me to take photos of her. I left her with my Travel Card with the phrase “Where I travel there are no strangers, only persons I have not met.”

Over these 3 years, we have stayed in contact, as she had a daughter named Blessing, now 2 years and 4 months old. They moved to the dessert of southern Namibia. Where she worked doing laundry for a Zinc Mining company. which has since closed.

Selma is determined to make a life for herself and her Blessing, the only family each other have. Having learned the laundry business in her work, and teaching herself apparel making, she is now accumulating the items needed for her to create a laundry and apparel mending company in the northern Namibian Savanah in the town of Ondangwa.

Herewith, are photos of Selma and her Blessing, various outfits she has made for herself (traditional and contemporary), the equipment she is acquiring, and some photos of the world in which they share.

She hopes with some additional funding, she can open sooner than later, the laundry named Blessing. A small package with a determined African mom, a blessing to each other.

If you ever find yourself in Ondangwa, Northern Namibia, may you be blessed.

It is a blessing to live in a world, where even isolated, we can remain connected.
