Biggie’s Big Day – ends with a Traditional Lozi Tribe, thank you, (Lwitumezi) of clapping hands, while stooped on bended knees.
This time last year, I wrote about my friend Nakushowa Mwenda, AKA Biggie, who had just finished school and was preparing for University. He joined me earlier today to share his progress with me. He has decided to attend Kabwe Institute of Technology. Where he will get a Bachelors of Education in Design in Technology, which will enable him to teach to others in High School.
As in many countries, education is not free, and one needs to find the funds and resources to pay for their education. His parents, his father a Brick Maker and his mother a Wood Products Sales Manager, are able to help with food and expenses, but not tuition and accommodation.
I suggested, he might want to see what the Dream Team led by Petty Muchimba , is doing in neighbouring Zimbabwe, to help students to generate the funds needed for school.
In talking with Biggie, I realized he was handicapped, by not having a computer, to find support, and that once he started college, he would need a computer for his classes especially his engineering design classes. So off we (Monde Litungii, Biggie and i) went to Manda Hill Mall, Lusaka, Zambia. There with the help Hi-fi Corp, we were able to get a package of Laptop, Printer, and laptop bag, with the help of Silas Trevorson Simwanza,De Hills and the Hi-Fi gang, for Biggie, to help him help himself. As part of the deal, Biggie will also assist me with his new computer, to help me help others, as I have helped him.
If you look at the application form line 6, you will see the requirement for a ‘Slasher’ this is for the students to help keep the grass around camcampus cut, and to engage the students in behaviour management, if they fail to maintain campus/school rules. Something, that would have kept me engaged, had I studied there. 😊
