A Lozi (tribal name of people who live here) haircut with a view. Once again it is time for a haircut, this time in Mongu, Zambia. For a change of pace my barber Musole, has come to me, and set up shop on the veranda of my guesthouse, Capital View. Instead of looking at myself as my hair is cut, I can see the Baroste Plain and watch my neighbors as they go about their daily routines. While I watch and my barber cuts, the guest house manager’s daughter watches as my hair is shortened.
At haircut’s end, the bill is $3.50, with a tip of $6,50 it totaled $10, two thirds of what it would cost me at home. And better yet not having to look in a mirror at one’s self, but instead at a view unimaginable, priceless.
Haircuts so far this year have been a bit of an adventure: Juarez, Mexico; Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Democratic Resettelement Community, Swakopmund, Nambia and now Baroste Plain, Zambia.
