One in 1.3 billion chances, that is what the odds it would seem to be when you are in a country of 1.3 billion people and you lose something as I and another did today. But one’s chances are improved when, those in such a society are conscientious, as was also the case today.
In the process of catching a taxi to visit and interact in a Chinese University class room, I left my most expensive camera, unbeknownst to me, in the taxi, only to have the taxi driver and a passenger to return minutes later to let me know, I had left my camera in the taxi. Something they could have easily kept they returned, with good conscience and responsibility. It was one of many such acts of kindness I have experienced in my travels.
Along with my camera they also returned to me papers and documents that were not mine, but someone else’s. Since they were in Chinese when I met my Chinese friend Harry for lunch I presented him with the papers. He informed me they were a medical insurance book for a rural family and were important for medical care. Harry proceeded to look at the documents, and found a contact number, which he called. It turns out the family was quite nervous at there loss and joyous of there recovery.
A single leaving and recovery of my camera, also led to the return of important documents to a family in need. The continuity of kindness in this world, is uplifting to experience and share.
