A close shave in Rocinha

June 1, 2017, Brazil

I had a close shave, in what is reputed to be one of the most dangerous places in the world. But since I am writing this, I must have survived. Not only did I survive, I got an excellent haircut and complimentary shave from Miguel Sales of the Salao Da Familia at Estrada da Gaves, 473 – Rocinha. And the price I paid for taking on this endeavor was quite reasonable.

While we did not share a language, I said ‘tres’ for the length of the sides based on international standard for a hair trimmer blade attachment, and placed my fingers on top of my head in my hair showing him to clip the top, fingers width. Then showed a shaving motion for the close shave I came for. Only to find out they don’t do shaves in his place. After, he had a chat with guide and photographer, about my travels and stories, he changed policy and also provided the complimentary shave.

Once the shave and cut were completed, Miguel gave a quick trim to Lusia Santos’ hair, and she returned the favor of giving him even a closer cut and shave that he had given me.

Once again I was impressed how perception versus reality differ. I have yet to find anything that would cause me to feel in danger as I live in Rocinha. Instead I am finding people, peacefully going about their life’s in a self-made neighborhood, with no help, from government or banks. People trying to make the best of the life they live.

History had repeated itself, it was less than two months before I had ventured in another city of list of danger, with friends Carlos Rey and Eduardo Sebastian, coming out safe and sound. Not a victim of crime or statistical information, but experiencing reality for myself. Luiza Chaves
